SUMMARY:Remy Jungermann\, Fall HVCCA Artist in Residence
DESCRIPTION:February 4 – April 26\, 2017\n\nOpening performance: February 4\, 2017\, 5:00 PM\n\nRemy Jungerman\, a Netherlands based multi media artist\, is winter 2017 HVCCA Artist in Residence\n\nBorn 1959 in the small Maroon community of Moengo in Suriname on the northern Atlantic coast of South America\, Jungerman has for the last two and a half decades made his home in the Netherlands. In his work an intersection occurs between the African textile designs of Surinam and Dutch artists of the De Stijl movement\, including Mondrian. Afro-Surinamese spirituality\, Winti\, is his dominant theme.\n\n“The Maroons are people from all parts of Africa who\, in escaping slavery\, penetrated deep into the rainforest of Suriname\, there creating a new community and blended culture based in African roots. “I believe that my heritage and my art go hand-in-hand. I am researching traditional\, cultural and religious spheres to determine what has happened and what is currently evolving in Suriname. I began with the Surinamese esthetic based in textile design. The Kuba cloth from the Congo and the Kente cloth from Ghana have very strong geometric patterns\, which the enslaved captives took to Suriname. This is my starting point\, in geometric and grid patterns.\n\nRemy Jungerman’s work was featured in numerous publications and has been acquired by various institutions and private collectors worldwide including: Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; Museum Het Domein Sittard; Zeeuws Museum Middelburg; Museum de Paviljoens Almere; NAI Rotterdam; Fries Museum Leeuwarden; Africa Museum Berg en Dal; Museum for Modern Art\, Arnhem; Rennies Collection\, Vancouver; Art Omi Collection\, NY; and The Francis J. Greenburger Collection\, NY. . He attended the Academy for Higher Arts and Cultural Studies\, Paramaribo (Suriname)\, before moving to Amsterdam where he studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.\n\nWith his art Remy tries to connect continents. He looks to the meanings of things and where those meanings come from. The fact that he links Surinamese traditional rituals textiles to geometrical lines of Modernism\, makes his art ‘all inclusive’ and with an extra layer. “

SUMMARY:Linda Eder at the WPPAC
DESCRIPTION:A fundraiser for WPPAC showcasing one of the greatest voices of our time; Linda Eder’s diverse repertoire spans Broadway\, Standards\, Pop\, Country and Jazz. As the tragic character “Lucy” in the Broadway musical Jekyll & Hyde\, from composer Frank Wildhorn\, Eder blew the roof off of New York’s Plymouth Theatre each night as she belted out signature songs “Someone Like You” and “A New Life”. Her Broadway debut\, for which she was rewarded with a Drama Desk nomination\, sent her already rapidly rising star blazing across the sky\, securing her spot as one of America’s most beloved singers and dynamic live performers. “What do we mean when we use the word perfection? The question arises every time I watch the pop singer Linda Eder….” Stephen Holden\, The New York Times\nEder launched her recording career in 1991 with her self-titled debut album and soon established a vital niche as America’s most popular and acclaimed new interpreter of pop standards and theatrical songs with 15 solo albums and 12 musical recordings. Those albums highlight Eder’s abundant vocal gifts as well as her skill for delivering dramatic\, emotionally resonant interpretations of familiar songs while making them her own. She followed up with The Other Side of Me\, a country pop blend of contemporary music – including a song written by Linda. And\, in June 2010\, Linda and Clay Aiken covered Roy Orbison’s “Crying” as a duet on Clay’s new album Tried & True.\nThe concert stage remains the mainstay of Eder’s career. She has performed for sold-out crowds in venues across the country and throughout Europe. She has been featured on numerous PBS television concert specials including Clay Aiken’s Tried & True; Hallelujah Broadway; Linda Eder: The PBS Concert; Best of Broadway: Broadway’s Leading Ladies; Best of Broadway: Love Songs; Jim Brickman plays The Disney Songbook; and more.\n\nAll proceeds to benefit the White Plains Performing Arts Center\, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit arts organization.
